So what about low mileage drivers? We price your policy based on how much you drive, so the less you drive, the more you save. Pretty sweet, right?

Each state has its own requirements and limitations when it comes to car insurance coverage, but don’t sweat it—when you apply with Lemonade, we’ll automatically get you hooked up with required Illinois coverages.

Just a refresher: A “limit” in regard to your car insurance policy refers to the maximum amount your insurer would pay out on a certain type of claim.

For example, for bodily injury liability coverage, Illinois drivers limits are written like so: $25,000/$50,000. These numbers reflect that you carry $25,000 of bodily injury coverage per person, and $50,000 of bodily injury coverage in total (for all of the people injured in an accident.)

Read below to get the full scoop on the coverages offered and required in Illinois, or you can just go ahead and apply with Lemonade Car. It’s fast, easy, and it’s even kind of fun!

Liability coverage

If you’re a law-abiding driver (and we know you are), you’re required in every state to have at least some liability coverage to be on the road.

Liability coverage is broken down into two parts:  bodily injury liability and property damage liability.

Lemonade Car offers several options for bodily injury liability coverage: $25,000/$50,000, $50,000/$100,000, $100,000/$300,000, $250,000/$500,000

Illinois requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of: $25,000/$50,000

For property damage liability coverage, Lemonade Car offers coverages of: $20,000, $25,000, $50,000, $100,000.

Illinois requires drivers to carry a minimum amount of: $20,000

Uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage

As we said earlier, in order to be a law-abiding driver, you need to have some sort of liability coverage. Not everyone follows the rules, or gets enough liability coverage to foot all of your medical expenses if you’re injured in an accident, leaving you with a hefty hospital bill. That’s where this coverage comes in.

Uninsured motorist/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage will cover medical bills and lost wages related to injuries caused by an uninsured/underinsured driver.

Lemonade offers several options for uninsured/underinsured motorist bodily injury coverage: $25,000/$50,000, $50,000/$100,000, $100,000/$300,000, $250,000/$500,000 (same as your bodily injury liability coverage unless specified.)

llinois drivers are required to carry a minimum amount of: $25,000/$50,000

Great coverages to have in Illinois

Collision coverage

Collision coverage helps pay to repair or replace your own car if it’s damaged in an accident with another vehicle or object, especially if you’re the one who caused it. If you’re technically at fault for the damages to your car, your collision coverage will kick in for repairs on covered claims, and get you back on the road.

Lemonade car offers collision coverage with deductibles of either: $250, $500, $1,000, or $2,000

Lemonade will pay up to: the actual cash value of your car

Comprehensive coverage

Also known as “act of god” coverage, comprehensive insurance coverage helps pay to fix damage to your car or possibly replace it from an incident that wasn’t a car accident.

That means if your car is stolen, vandalized, or has an unexpected rendezvous with an animal, for example, comprehensive coverage kicks in to repair or replace your car.

Lemonade car offers comprehensive coverage with deductibles of either:  $250, $500, $1,000, or $2,000

Lemonade will pay up to: the actual cash value of your car

Medical payments coverage (MedPay)

It’s not pleasant to think about, but if you or other passengers in your car get hurt in a car accident, this coverage comes into play, regardless of who was at fault.

In Illinois, you have the option to add medical payments (MedPay) coverage to your car insurance policy.

MedPay covers some medical expenses, including, but not limited to:

  • Ambulance fees after a car accident
  • X-rays, surgeries, or a prostheses
  • Health insurance co-pays
  • Doctors and hospital visits
  • Nursing services
  • Funeral services

Lemonade Car offers Illinois drivers MedPay coverage with deductibles of: $1,000, $2,000, $5,000, or $10,000.

Uninsured/underinsured motorist property damage coverage

If you get into a car accident with an uninsured driver, or with a driver who doesn’t have enough property damage liability coverage, this coverage will cover the costs of repairing your vehicle.

Unlike uninsured/underinsured bodily injury coverage, which is required to drive in Illinois, uninsured/underinsured property damage coverage is optional in the Land of Lincoln (but a great idea to add to your coverage anyway!)

With Lemonade Car, Illinois drivers can get UMPDC for a deductible of: $250

Lemonade offers coverage of either: $15,000 or $25,000

Lemonade Car extras that are great to have

Temporary transportation coverage

Most insurance companies will only cover a rental car if you need alternative transportation while your car is being repaired, but Lemonade works differently, and will cover almost any type of transportation for up to a month while you’re waiting for your car in the shop. This includes Uber, Lyft, rental car expenses, or even public transportation like buses or Citi Bikes, up to your daily limit.

If you have both collision and comprehensive coverage on your car, you’ll get the option of selecting temporary transportation coverage for your car as well.

With Lemonade Car, if you choose to get temporary transportation coverage, you can sign up for a: $40 daily limit, $50 daily limit, or a $60 daily limit

Roadside assistance

Roadside assistance provides towing and other emergency roadside services like lockout services, flat tire replacement, jumpstarts for dead batteries, fuel delivery, winching and battery service if your car breaks down.

Lemonade Car includes roadside assistance as part of a car insurance policy when users drive with the Lemonade app (and when the policy includes comprehensive and collision coverages). It’s included for each car listed and covered by a Lemonade insurance policy for free.

Other car insurance companies offer the option for a customer to purchase emergency roadside assistance as an endorsement or for a monthly or annual fee, but Lemonade is happy to get you out of a pickle, on us!

With Lemonade Car, you can call on roadside assistance up to: three times per vehicle within a 6-month policy period
